CSIRO LICENCES SHEARER
POSITION MEASUREMENT SYSTEM TO QSDM
CSIRO͊ longwall automation technology, LASC, is becoming an
integral part of underground longwall coal mining, with a
majority of Australian coal mines having installed or
ordered LASC-enabled longwall equipment.
To facilitate uptake of the technology to date CSIRO has
been manufacturing and supplying the LASC longwall
shearer-mounted hardware, referred to as the Shearer
Position Measurement System (SPMS), to the licensed
With growing international interest, CSIRO has now entered
into a licensing agreement for Canadian company QSDM Inc.
to manufacture, support and supply the SPMS modules.
CSIRO's David Reid supported by funding from the Australian
Coal Association Research Program, ACARP, led an eight year
collaborative project to develop this world's best practice
ee the technology develop through modelling, pilot
trials and now out into the field is extremely rewarding.
Partnership with companies such as QSDM will continue this
process allowing more mines access to the technology
thereby improving efficiency and safety,㡹s David.
President of QSDM Inc, Conrad Zalai adds, "This agreement
fits perfectly with QSDM's mandate to provide
state-of-the-art solutions to challenges faced by industry.
We look forward to continuing our close working
relationship with CSIRO."
The supply chain will remain via the LASC-licensed longwall
LASC has been commercialised by all major longwall

experience in the design, manufacture and support of
high-reliability industrial quality electronic equipment.
This arrangement will ensure that the LASC technology
continues to be delivered and further developed to the
benefit of the industry.
CSIROӨearer Position Measurement System will be
manufactured, supplied and supported by QSDM Inc. under a
